Cardiac Markers
The American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology have changed the clinical and diagnostic definition of myocardial infarction. Current technology can detect areas of myocardial necrosis under 1 g in weight. Positive blood tests for cardiac troponin or CK-MB can accurately and reliably label these small infarcts as an MI.
To diagnose acute myocardial infarction (MI): Myoglobin is a sensitive early marker often elevating within 2 hrs. Troponin I is proven specific to myocardium reaching the upper limit of normal in 4-6 hours and remaining elevated for up to 7-10 days. CK-MB reaches the upper limit of normal in 3-6 hours.
