Most people do not know they are infected because they don’t look or feel sick. There are at least five types of hepatitis caused by different hepatitis viruses. Hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C are the most common types found in the United States. Hepatitis A is caused by hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B, is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV, HBsAg, Anti-HBs, HBeAg, Anti-HBe and Anti HBc), and hepatitis C is caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV).
In the United States, viral hepatitis ranks third among reportable communicable diseases. An estimated 3.2 million persons in the United States have chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Globally, chronic hepatitis B affects approximately 350 million people and contributes to an estimated 620,000 deaths worldwide each year. Every year, more than 600,000 Americans become newly infected with some form of viral hepatitis, yet only 10 percent of these cases are reported to health authorities.
